# How can I use Smart Sorting to arrange my students automatically?

The *Smart Sorting* tool allows you to arrange your students automatically, based on their characteristics, their preferences and your preferences.

1. To access *Smart Sorting*, click the 'Rearrange' button on the left toolbar.

2. Make sure the 'Smart Sorting' tab is selected.

3. Use the sliders to either separate or group students by as many characteristics as you want. For example, to group students by target grade, but separate them by gender:

4. Click 'Regenerate seating plan'. In the next two seconds, Seating Plan's unique and secure algorithm will generate 10,000 different plans and pick the best one for you.
