# How can I assign students to groups?

There are two ways to assign students to groups using Seating Plan:
1. [The Random Group Maker](https://www.seatingplan.com/tools/groupmaker) - one of Seating Plan's [free teacher tools](https://www.seatingplan.com/tools)
2. The Smart Group Maker - more powerful, allowing groups to be assigned automatically

### Random Group Maker

Simply choose whether you want a certain number of groups or if you want each group to be a particular size, then click 'Make groups'.

### Smart Group Maker 

As above, select the basic requirements of your groups. In addition to this, you may choose to include [student/teacher preferences](/en/article/how-can-i-seat-students-based-on-their-preferences-18ya5vo/) and to make your groups single-gender (great for assigning rooms on residential trips).
